Ocean Career: Marine Ecosystem Senior Scientist at MASTS

We are now seeking a highly motivated Senior Marine Ecosystems Scientist to join the Marine Ecosystems team.

The post-holder will be working an exciting area of work which is already well under way that is making benthic habitat indicators operational for a variety of policy purposes, but particularly the 25 YEP Integrated Outcome Framework, the production of the annual progress report and target setting, and leading the development and operationalisation of the marine indicators. You will be responsible for further developing the incorporation of climatic drivers into current work areas, particularly for indicator-led assessments.

A key requirement is a good knowledge of how science informs and shapes policy, together with strong organisational and communication skills to be able to maximise coordination both within JNCC and with external organisations and partners nationally and internationally. Opportunities will exist to grow the programmes of work through seeking external income and promoting your work and that of you partners and colleagues through scientific journals and other media.

Post Duties

The post holder will work under the Marine ecosystem Team and work with a range of other specialists, both within JNCC and in other organisations. The main duties of the post are:

  • Lead the coordination and input to support the implementation of the 25 YEP Integrated Outcome Framework, and the production of the annual progress report and target setting
  • Work with other project managers on a programme of work for the development and operationalisation of 25 YEP marine indicators for habitat condition and ecosystem functioning.
  • Develop quantitate methods and/or modelling approaches for the integration of benthic indicators and development of thresholds to produce whole ecosystem assessments, and exploring the use of data from climate drivers to assess impact from Climate change.
  • Support the coordination of UK Marine strategy Part 1 coordination, and current discussions between the alignment of GES targets and Programme of measures.
  • Support the streamlining and harmonisation of assessments, against a range of national and international policy drivers, notably CBD, UK Marine Strategy and OSPAR Convention.
  • Explore approaches to expand the current knowledge and capabilities for international work areas, in particular work related to indicators and targets under CBD and SDG, marine metrics and biodiversity evaluations to inform ICF-ODA, marine biodiversity indicators on Overseas Territories and other areas.

Provide expert technical advice on benthic habitat assessments and the implementation of environmental legislation to Governments, including coordination of input from others within JNCC and the nature conservation agencies.

Actively identify opportunities to fund R&D activities through external income and partnership with other institutions, agencies, NGOs and industries, in particular those relevant for funding under the Blue Planet Fund.

Manage staff, contracts and partnerships necessary to support the work described above.

Contribute, as necessary, to other aspects of work for the Marine Ecosystems Team and the organisation as a whole.

Experience

To be a successful candidate you will have:

  • Verifiable experience in the management and analysis of datasets using GIS/QGis, PostgresSQL, and/or verifiable experience in developing R-scrips or other languages and/or numerical or modelling techniques to manipulate, interrogate and analyse large and complex datasets from multiple sources – Essential
  • Good understanding of different types of biological and environmental data available from a range of sources e.g. Industry, Monitoring etc – Essential
  • Good knowledge of relevant quality assurance and quality control procedures – Essential.
  • Knowledge of marine environmental monitoring, sampling and data interpretation techniques, including knowledge and experience of assessing how marine activities may affect marine biodiversity – Desirable
  • Experience on staff management, contracts and partnerships – Desirable
  • Experience on the development of evidence products and advice to inform policy implementation and/or management – Desirable
