Ocean Career: Marine Institute Team Leader—Marine Socio-Economic and Social Data & Evidence Programme

The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development, and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realize the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource, promote the sustainable development of the marine industry through strategic funding programs and scientific services, and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national, and international marine partners.

Summary of the Role:

Working with a cross-services team, the successful candidate will provide a key role in coordinating and delivering socio-economic data-focused services and products to support the Marine Socio-Economic and Social Data & Evidence Programme (MSP) and also provide data and analysis to support integrated marine policy evidence-based decision making. This involves liaising with government clients, and users of the data, to ensure the data and evidence is available to support the implementation and monitoring of the National Marine Planning Framework.

The role includes ongoing research into the dynamics of Ireland’s ocean and coastal economies, ensuring national capacity and capabilities can support policy needs, national data collection and modeling requirements required for Marine Spatial Planning, blue growth, and regional and rural analysis.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • A relevant degree in economics/business, science, data analytics, computer science, spatial analysis or planning, engineering, or other numerical discipline.
  • At least three years of relevant economics or marine science post-qualification work experience.
  • Experience with coordination of economic/technical deliverables, products/services.
  • Excellent writing skills for both peer-review and public outreach formats.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both in writing and verbally with technical and non-technical groups.
  • A proven ability to effectively manage and motivate people.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams.
  • The ability to work unsupervised with demonstrated ability to use initiative.
  • An ability to travel to relevant working groups, workshops and conferences nationally and internationally.
  • A high level of computer literacy, including the use of Office software packages, use of statistical/data analysis packages, e.g., Stata, SPSS, Tableau, R, etc., mapping and other data visualization software.
