Ocean Career: MOTE Coral Health and Disease Biologist

This position will primarily oversee a public facing coral workforce development laboratory at Mote’s Science and Education Aquarium (Mote SEA, opening in 2025). The staff member will manage the coral-rearing aquaria systems, coral fragments, coral recruits, and the laboratory supplies and equipment on a day to day basis, including during the high-traffic weekend days at this public space. The staff member will also create training curricula, mentor interns as part of the workforce development process, and communicate directly with the public and education staff at Mote SEA to discuss and share activities with visitors.

Primary Duties:

  • Oversee daily care and maintenance of corals and the aquaria within the Mote SEA coral workforce development laboratory including general coral husbandry tasks on any corals include siphoning and cleaning aquaria, employing algal mitigation strategies, maintaining grazing organisms, administering treatments, providing appropriate lighting schemes, conduct/oversee onsite water chemistry analyses, feeding coral, propagating corals as needed
  • Maintain and manage wet lab space – includes ordering supplies, maintain water quality and equipment (pumps, lights, etc), maintain coral inventory
  • Develop curricula in collaboration with Mote’s education team for formal classroom and hands on training within the workforce development space
  • Manage, oversee, and conduct research in collaboration with interns to optimize coral health, growth, asexual production, and sexual reproduction of endemic Florida corals
  • Represent Mote SEA’s coral workforce development lab on working groups, in workshops, and within meetings
  • Liaise between collaborative institutions for knowledge exchange and collaborative projects
  • Ensure a safe, clean and organized indoor wetlab space
  • Manage and mentor Mote SEA coral interns. This includes providing project support for regular Mote interns, high school interns, NSF REU, Mote REU, and Marsci Lace students and others as needed
  • Assist Mote’s development and education departments with outreach activities: this includes providing presentations on Mote SEA coral workforce development lab, providing tours of the lab, and participating in donor-related events

Additional duties will include assisting Mote staff with various duties related to the daily operation of a full-service marine laboratory

Minimum Qualifications or Requirements:

  • S. degree in the marine or biological sciences from an accredited college or university.
  • US citizenship or valid and existing US visa
  • Valid Florida driver’s license
  • Experience in saltwater aquaria care, with a preference for Caribbean coral species
  • Ability to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Must show ability to work HIGHLY independently as Mote SEA is geographically different than supervisory location (Mote Aquaculture Research Park)
  • Must have high functioning communication skills to keep supervisors and collaborators, which will not routinely be on site, updated frequently
  • Ability to work both Saturday and Sunday, the busiest times of engagement, will be required

Additional Recommended Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with experimental design and independent research
  • Mentorship, education, and outreach experience
  • Comfortable working long hours at indoor raceways
  • Comfortable speaking to the public throughout work hours
  • Working knowledge of computer software (Microsoft products, Word, Excel, R studio, Tracks inventory management) for entering and analyzing data Master’s of Science degree preferred, but not required
