Ocean Career: MOTE Research Technician

The research technician’s function at MOTE is to support the research activities of the Molecular Microbiology lab under Dr. Kirstie Francis, specifically, assisting in the purification and structure elucidation of active compounds and generating new microbial extracts and fractions for bioactivity screening. This is a temporary, full-time position with a start date in fall or winter 2025, and includes an hourly wage of $19-21/hour, commensurate with experience. This is a one-year position starting from the date of hire with possibility for renewal.

Primary duties:

  • Perform chemical extraction and SPE fractionation of microbial extracts
  • Analyze extracts and fractions with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Perform semi-preparative HPLC to purify active compounds
  • Use MS/MS data to dereplicate known compounds in GNPS
  • Elucidate structures of novel compounds using NMR and HRMS spectra
  • Analyze data and assist in generating summary figures and/or reports

Required skills/knowledge:

  • General lab safety
  • Experience with analytical chemistry instrumentation and data analysis
  • Exceptional time management, troubleshooting, and organizational skills
  • Ability to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Physically able to lift 50 pounds and remain standing/walking for multiple hours a day

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with scientific writing and manuscript preparation
  • Experience operating an Agilent Q-TOF mass spectrometer
  • Experience with structure elucidation and/or depreplication in GNPS
