Ocean Career: NCC Assistant Partnership Officer

Are you interested in helping to protect and enhance one of the UK’s most important marine areas? An exciting opportunity has arisen with the Berwickshire and Northumberland Marine Nature Partnership, hosted by Northumberland County Council (NCC).

As our Assistant Partnership Officer you will be part of a team of two people, working with our Partnership Officer to promote the sustainable use of the sea and estuaries from Tynemouth in England to Fast Castle Head in Scotland. As part of a varied job you will:

  • Champion the importance of our local marine environment and inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
  • Support partnership communications, outreach, and events
  • Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to foster effective joint-working
  • Assist in developing and delivering citizen science and data-gathering initiatives


Our ideal candidate will combine excellent communication skills with a good understanding of coastal and marine issues. They will be self-motivated, adaptable, collaborative with an ability to develop working relationships with people from a range of backgrounds to deliver environmental outcomes and build ocean literacy.

Duties and key result areas:

  • Assist the Partnership Officer in maintaining effective communications between the Marine Nature Partnership and its members through setting up and running meetings and events, producing e-communications and update bulletins, liaising with partner organizations, and helping to maintain and update the Partnership’s website and online Marine Protected Area (MPA) toolkit
  • Assist with the collation of data and evidence to assess success in delivery of the Management Scheme for the inshore MPAs found between the River Tyne in England and Fast Castle Head in Scotland
  • Represent the Marine Nature Partnership in external meeting or events as required
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and promotion of the Marine Nature Partnership’s current Citizen Science activities (rocky shore condition monitoring, Eider Duck monitoring, and CoastSnap photo-monitoring of coastal change) and work with the public and with other Citizen Science or data gathering initiatives to increase the number of people involved with collecting data about our local marine environment
  • Promote the importance of our local marine environment and our suite of inshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and help to raise awareness about the pressures on these; commission and/or produce new engagement and outreach material as necessary
  • Contribute towards the organization and delivery of outreach events such as our annual ‘Eider Duck Day’ celebration
  • Produce social media content to promote the work of the Marine Nature Partnership and to engage the public over issues of marine management
  • Promote Marine Nature Partnership publications such as The Wild Recreation Guide and the Marine Invasive Non-Native Species Strategy for Berwickshire, Northumberland and North Tyneside; assist with the updating of existing documents and the production of new documents as appropriate
  • Assist with the scoping and development of new projects and funding bids


The post is based at Northumberland County Hall in Morpeth, with flexible options for working from other council sites or from home. Travel across Northumberland, North Tyneside, and Berwickshire is required, including some outdoor work. A full driving license and access to a car are essential. The post is initially for an 18-month period with the possibility of extension. This is a full-time position but applications on a secondment or part-time basis would be considered for the right applicant.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB

We are looking for someone with:

  • A degree, apprenticeship or relevant training or experience in the marine or environmental sectors.
  • Experience in working in partnership to achieve shared conservation objectives or deliver specific projects.
  • A full driving license and access to a vehicle that can be used for work purposes.


Salary range: £28,598 – £31,022
