Ocean Career: RCUH Marine Carbon Technician

The Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i (RCUH) Non-Civil Service Marine Carbon Technician position is with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Department of Oceanography, located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

DUTIES:

Oversees the design and deployment of five (5) new ocean acidification buoys around, the Hawaiian Islands (Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai). Participates in buoy deployments and data collection. Conducts servicing and troubleshooting for field and lab equipment/instruments. Maintains cleaning and washing procedures (e.g., scraping off barnacles and other marine organisms, using power washer and power sanding tools) to ensure buoys are working properly. Drives project vehicle to carry equipment to project sites. Ships and receives equipment. Collects and processes seawater samples in the lab. Assists with preparing and maintaining written documentation of operating procedures for instruments and processes. Maintains supply inventory. Ensures that all equipment and supplies are available at the remote locations, as needed. Processes and analyzes collected data.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Oceanography, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Marine, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in fabricating, deploying, and maintaining oceanographic instrumentation. This includes experience with MS Office programs and proprietary software; working with written, oral, and visual reports; and maintaining daily operations in a laboratory and office.
  • KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of scientific data streams. Knowledge of electronics designed to be deployed in the ocean. General knowledge in a programing language (Phyton, Matlab or R) and Windows operating systems, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (or equivalent software).
  • ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues. Proficient computer, written and verbal communication skills. Ability to perform fabrication/maintenance of equipment and instruments. Ability to use power tools and electronics safely. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
  • PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Ability to work in the coastal environment. Ability to collect samples at sea following designated research protocols. Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds of scientific equipment or tools unassisted, or more assisted. Strong swimming skills necessary. Comfortable working on small boats.
  • POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i’s and/or business entity’s policies, procedures, and trainings. Violation of RCUH’s, UH’s, or business entity’s policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Marine Geochemistry.

Salary range:  $3,700–$4,700 /Month
