Ocean Career: RSPB International Marine Outreach Officer

The International Marine Outreach Officer at RSPB will lead and deliver creative and compelling communications that support global efforts to reduce seabird bycatch in high-risk fisheries. This role will play a key part in raising awareness, influencing stakeholders, and showcasing the impact of our work through engaging case studies, digital content, and campaign materials.

Key Responsibilities

Campaign Development & Delivery

  • Plan, design and implement public-facing campaign materials to highlight the impact of fisheries on seabirds and promote Best Practice mitigation solutions.
  • Develop and deliver targeted communications to support supply chain engagement and policy advocacy.
  • Coordinate spotlight stories and case studies for use in media, reports, and presentations.

Content Creation & Storytelling

  • Produce high-quality written and visual content, including:
    • Articles for internal and external publications (e.g., Impact magazine, ATF Annual Report).
    • Interview-style features on inspiring team members and success stories.
    • Infographics on key facts (e.g., bycatch statistics, population trends, solution effectiveness).
    • Social media content for platforms like Instagram (e.g., Albatross Stories).
  • Collate and curate video footage and imagery from BirdLife Partners and other collaborating NGOs to support campaign messaging.

Media & Digital Engagement

  • Work with the RSPB and BirdLife International communications teams to increase visibility of seabird bycatch work across digital channels.
  • Maintain and grow social media presence, including reviving dormant channels and posting weekly updates.
  • Coordinate communications to fishery stakeholders with collaborating NGOs following scientific publications and key events.

Internal Coordination & Reporting

  • Serve as the communications point of contact for the International Marine Programme.
  • Track and report on communications outputs and impact, contributing to annual reports (e.g., Regional Fishery Management Organisations, Albatross Task Force, Supply Chain projects).
  • Support internal knowledge sharing through meeting notes, workshop summaries, and presentations.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

  • Proven experience in communications, journalism, campaigning, or a related field.
  • Passion for conservation and environmental issues.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific or policy information into accessible content.
  • Strong understanding of digital and social media strategies.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of marine conservation or fisheries issues.
  • Experience working in an international or cross-cultural context.
  • Graphic design or video editing skills.

Salary range: £30,075.00 – £32,108.00 Per Annum
