Ocean Career: Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation Shorebird Technician

A shorebird technician position is available to help the Coastal Wildlife Department of the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) with shorebird monitoring and research on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and the surrounding area. The shorebird technician will be responsible for assisting the shorebird biologist with monitoring of nesting shorebirds (state-threatened snowy plovers and least terns, and Wilson’s plovers), year-round shorebird monitoring, shorebird surveys for beach construction projects, data entry and proofing, coordinating volunteers, conducting public presentations, and preparing written content for newsletters and social media.

Additional responsibilities may include deployment and maintenance of trail cameras, occasional rescue and transport of sick or entangled/injured wildlife to wildlife rehabber, and miscellaneous tasks as needed. The shorebird technician must be willing to assist with other projects including but not limited to: bald eagle nest monitoring, swallow-tailed kite nest monitoring, sea turtle monitoring and research, and our ongoing monofilament collection and recycling effort (www.mindyourline.org).

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of shorebird related experience
  • Experience following protocols and independently collecting data
  • Experience providing leadership and support to interns and volunteers
  • Experience with resighting and reporting banded birds
  • Ability and desire to work long, irregular hours (including weekend hours)
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions (intense sun and heat, biting insects, rain)
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude & sense of humor
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Data entry/management experience
  • Willingness to use your personal vehicle for work if needed (mileage compensated)
  • Experience with public outreach (interacting with the public when asked questions)
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to walk 2-5 miles on the beach and maneuver through dense vegetation while carrying heavy equipment
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience banding shorebirds
  • Experience with trail cameras/ nest cameras
  • Experience with inter-agency cooperation
  • Sea turtle nest monitoring experience


Salary: starting at $38,000 per year
