Ocean Career: Sapelo Island NERR Research Coordinator/Marine Biologist 3

The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) is seeking to fill the position of Research and Monitoring Program Coordinator (RC). The RC oversees most research on Sapelo Island by vetting, approving, and facilitating visiting researchers on the island. This position also collaborates with other external partners on regional estuarine-focused applied research projects, and when appropriate, leads Reserve-based research. In addition, the RC administers the System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP), a long-term nationally standardized water quality and meteorological monitoring program. The RC will supervise the SWMP program’s full-time technician, and other part-time interns. The RC may also lead monthly estuarine fish trawl surveys. Other duties include tracking budgets, writing technical reports, writing annual award proposals and grants, collaboration with the other Reserve sectors, data management, and fleet and housing management. The candidate should have technical ecological knowledge of estuaries

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university

AND

One year of related experience.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university

AND

Two years of related experience.

OR

One year of experience required at the lower-level Marine Biologist 2 (NRP041) or position equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • A Ph.D. in Oceanography, Marine Ecology, or other closely related field
  • At least one year experience of supervising employees
  • In-depth technical knowledge of estuaries in the South Atlantic Bight
  • Experience operating small boats in estuarine waters
  • Strong technical and grant writing skills
  • DNR/WRD employment experience

Compensation: $56,451.42 annually
