We work in a professional way towards our shared goals, knowing the work we do makes a genuine, lasting difference on the environment. As an Assistant Scientist (Marine Ecologist), for Ecology within Data, Evidence and Innovation, your role will include:
- Participation in a range of ecological fieldwork including working aboard SEPA’s or the Marine Directorate of the Scottish Government’s survey vessels potentially across a wide range of locations around Scotland. NOTE: Vessel fieldwork may include extended periods of survey away from home/base office
- Collection of a range of different environmental sample types, primarily for marine seabed invertebrate and sediment characterization
- Analysis of environmental samples, primarily marine seabed invertebrate and sediment, in SEPA’s laboratory at our Angus Smith Building, Eurocentral, North Lanarkshire
This is an important role within our Data, Evidence and Innovation portfolio. The post has been created to allow our Marine Ecology Unit to monitor and assess the biological health of Scotland’s marine ecosystems across the whole of Scotland with a current focus on the regulation of marine aquaculture. This means you’ll need:
- Minimum HND or equivalent in relevant ecological science discipline
- Broad understanding of ecology, with a more detailed understanding of Marine Ecology desirable
- Full, clean, UK driving license is essential
- 1 year of experience in an applied laboratory or environmental monitoring environment (not necessarily post qualification)
- Experience of effectively working in a team environment
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Understanding of Health and Safety requirements relevant to laboratory and/or field environments
Salary range: Band F, £30,369.00 to £32,463.00, starting salary will be on the base of the salary scale, £30,369.00
