The interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research group comprises a diverse range of researchers with backgrounds in analytical chemistry, ecotoxicology, microbiology, environmental chemistry, ecology, optics, and bioinformatics. SINTEF Ocean are now establishing a large infrastructure for full scale marine research in Trondheimsfjorden and at the coast of Mid-Norway: The infrastructure, OceanLab/Fjordlab, includes subsea test facilities for autonomous underwater drones, a test area for autonomous vessels, a marine ecosystem observatory and test facilities for aquaculture. We are now building the organization for this large infrastructure and search for enthusiastic co-workers with a heart for the oceans.
The role
Our team conduct projects aimed at both fundamental research that push the boundaries of ocean measurement technology, and industry-driven research to enhance methods for environmental decision-making. We operate the OceanLab Observatory (www.oceanlabobservatory.no) and provide a platform for other researchers to both run their experiments and utilize the time-series data collected. We are seeking to expand our team of technically minded scientists working towards modernizing operational ocean science, with a diverse range of skills that include:
- Designing and constructing novel, bespoke embedded systems
- Data analysis and Machine Learning
- Data visualization
- Designing, building, and maintaining operational data pipelines
- Containerization (Docker), data virtualization and cloud computing (Azure)
Fieldwork
We work primarily with Python, running on Linux systems, with flexible hardware components.
Additional skills and experience that are also of benefit, include:
- Programming serial communication devices, ssh, bash, NMEA, UDP & TCP, HTML
- Modem and network configuration and setup
- Telemetry systems based on 4G, 5G, Iridium, MBR
- InfluxDB and Grafana configuration and management
This role provides excellent exposure to multiple disciplines within ocean science and technology, and also gives opportunities for you to develop your skills in project management, and crafting research proposals.
We are looking for candidates who have at least a completed Masters degree, with experience in ocean science and technology, and are strong team players with a proactive approach to working with other researchers and identifying solutions.
