Ocean Career: SIO Senior Marine Mechanician

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a highly experienced Senior Marine Mechanician. Under general supervision, the Senior Marine Mechanician performs highly skilled machining and fabrication tasks in support of cutting-edge oceanographic research projects as well as external collaborations with aerospace and defense industries. Core responsibilities include precision machining on Haas CNC (Computer Numerical Control) mills and lathes, ProtoTRAK controlled mills, manual mills and lathes, and OMAX water jet equipment. Programming responsibilities include utilizing Mastercam software and interpreting SolidWorks CAD (Computer aided design) models to produce complex, tight-tolerance components.

The position requires a minimum of seven years overall machining experience, including at least five years recent experience operating CNC mills and lathes with Mastercam programming. The successful candidate must demonstrate proven competence in both CNC and manual machining, including the ability to efficiently utilize Mastercam’s modern toolpaths, apply GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles, and consistently produce tight-tolerance components (<.001”) from materials such as aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, copper, and plastics.

While machining is the primary focus, the role may also involve occasional fabrication, assembly, shop equipment maintenance, and support of shipboard or marine-related mechanical systems. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who takes pride in their work, communicates effectively with researchers and engineers, and adapts seamlessly between oceanographic prototypes and aerospace/defense projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma and at least 6 years of machining/fabrication experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skilled in performing machining-related math (geometry, trigonometry, and GD&T) and in precisely interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of general machine shop operations including machining techniques, tooling selection, setups, and safety protocols for diverse materials (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, copper, plastics, etc.).   • Proficient computer skills including CAD/CAM software, SolidWorks, Mastercam, Excel, and general computing.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to maintain and repair shop equipment.
  • Ability to effectively utilize technical resources, machinery, hand tools, and precision measuring equipment to accomplish assigned tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, comfortable working collaboratively with team members, researchers, engineers, and external partners.
  • Understanding of operational safety procedures for forklifts, overhead hoists, and general shop practices.
  • Aptitude to learn marine-specific and hydraulic equipment as required for supporting research expeditions and vessel installations.
  • Basic familiarity with marine safety, maritime workmanship standards, and regulatory bodies (U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, Navy) desirable, or willingness to learn quickly.
  • Ability to effectively delegate tasks to temporary personnel or team members as needed.
  • Excellent capability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and sketches accurately.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to Environmental Health and Safety principles and practices.


Salary range: $36.26 – $42.50 / Hour
