Ocean Career: UF Marine Fisheries Technician

This position is in support of a NOAA RESTORE funded project that focuses on the changes in the growth and distribution of fish species over time and latitudinal gradient along the west Florida coast. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for ageing, imaging, and measuring fish otoliths from a variety of marine fish species (75%), as well as processing stereo-video reef fish surveys (25%). This is an in-person, laboratory-based position in Gainesville, Florida (i.e., no remote work) at the University of Florida (UF). Experience with imaging systems, otoliths, or video surveys is preferred but not required, and training will be provided. Other duties include data entry and maintenance of imaging equipment, including microscopes and cameras. Other duties as assigned.

This is an hourly, term-limited position (maximum of 2 years) suitable for a recent graduate with a B.S. degree and an interest in marine fisheries.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational, communication, time management, and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a research team environment.
  • Ability to write legibly and record data accurately.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks based on deadlines.
  • Ability to operate a computer with a Windows operating system.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Ability to use a microscope, camera, and imaging software. Training will be provided for specific software.
  • Familiarity in identifying reef fish species in Florida.
  • Ability to enter recorded data into Excel spreadsheets.
  • Ability to manage Excel databases.

Salary: starting at $17 per hour
