Ocean Career: UHI Shetland Fisheries Research Assistant

UHI Shetland is seeking applications are invited for to support their programs focused on fisheries data collection, research and consultancy services. The role will be varied in nature and with a strong practical element. You will need to be highly motivated, collaborative team player, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy. You will need to communicate effectively with Fisheries Scientists, the wider department, and to foster excellent relations with industry stakeholders and research partners.

The role will require you to undertake biological and fisheries data collection and sampling at fish markets, processors and in our laboratories, with some out-of-hours work and some day trips on both commercial and UHI-Shetland vessels. Training in biological sampling and data entry will be provided. There will be opportunities to develop your role as a researcher within new and existing projects and consultancy.

The successful candidate will hold either a degree in a relevant area, such as marine biology or ecology, or will have a working experience of the fishing industry and a desire to be involved in the practical work that supports scientific research.

JOB PURPOSE

The main duties of the Fisheries Research Assistant are data collection, research and consultancy services. Undertaking biological and fisheries data collection, sampling at markets, processors and our laboratories, including day trips on both commercial and UHI Shetland vessels.

MAIN DUTIES

  1. Work as part of the fisheries team to effectively carry out the fisheries sampling program & assist with project data collection, coordinating sampling and ensuring that targets are achieved. Sampling and data collection will be undertaken at fish markets, processing factories on board commercial fishing vessels and day-trips onboard the Shetland UHI vessels. Sampling will require some out of hours working.
  2. Assist with data entry, quality control processes, data analysis and report writing. Taking responsibility for ensuring accuracy and validity of information and maintaining confidentiality throughout.
  3. Assist with laboratory-based sampling.
  4. To maintain and improve working relationships with the industry and their representatives, with discretion and sensitivity to the potential confidential nature of any information received.
  5. To uphold the Shetland UHI’s commitment to ensuring quality, equality of opportunity and non-discrimination in all aspects of work.
  6. To be responsible for ensuring that the Shetland UHI Health and Safety Policy is adhered to at all times, and that safe working practices are employed within all areas of operation.
  7. Undertake any other reasonable duty as delegated by the Fisheries Section Leader and Head of Marine Sciences. This may include special assignments and ad hoc duties arising from changes, expansion or development of Shetland UHI and the necessary reallocation of duties to meet the needs of the Department at any particular time.

The specific responsibilities of the post may be adjusted from time to time as necessary. The post holder will be expected to have a flexible approach and be willing to adapt to changes in their role in response to the changing needs of the college.
