Responsibilities include preparation for research cruises, processing cruise samples, generating cDNA, making amplicon sequence libraries, and quantifying diazotrophs using qPCR. The specialist’s duties will also include general lab management including stocking reagents, culture maintenance, ordering supplies, and overseeing basic lab maintenance.
Applicants with expertise in the following areas are encouraged to apply:
- Basic molecular biology skills.
- DNA removal from RNA extracts using DNAse.
- Complementary DNA generation using the Invitrogen SuperScriptIV kit.
- Knowledge of quantitative PCR using Taqman® chemistry.
- Expertise in conducting cell counts of phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria using a BD Influx cell sorter.
Qualifications
- B.S. (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, marine biology, or a related scientific field. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by September 30, 2024.
- A minimum of one year of research experience in a microbial oceanography lab (while obtaining B.A./B.S. or post-degree).

See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 – $56,600.
