The Relief Marine Operation Specialist is an entry level position supporting the Marine Operations Department of VIMS. The position reports to the Director of Marine Operations and helps to ensure the overall readiness of vessels and the execution of scientific activities as appropriate.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist the Marine Operations Department in the repair, service, and operation of marine engines, vessels, and trailers.
- Handles mooring lines while supporting vessel movements.
- Assists in cleaning, maintaining, and operation of vessel-related equipment as appropriate to experience and training.
- Serve as a temporary deck hand aboard our research vessels.
Required Qualifications
Education/License:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License
Competencies:
- Basic seamanship and general mechanical skills.
- Able to work on both land and sea.
- Working knowledge of basic power tools in either a marine, automotive, or construction setting.
- Proficiency in using personal computers which includes experience with MS Office applications and basic email programs.
- Effective communication and interactive skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups.
Experience:
- Experience working with basic power tools in either a marine, automotive, or construction setting.v
- Experience using computers with MS Office applications and basic email programs.
- Experience working in a group environment where cooperation was needed to complete tasks.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
