The Deep Submergence Laboratory (DSL) at WHOI is looking for motivated mechanical engineer to join our team. DSL specializes in the design, construction, and operation of cutting-edge underwater robots and submersibles that enable groundbreaking scientific research in some of the deepest and most remote parts of the ocean. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the development, maintenance, and operation of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Sentry, which is capable of diving to depths of 6,000 meters. This role includes responsibilities for shore-based engineering projects and at-sea field operations, which may require significant travel. Candidates should anticipate spending up to 100 days per year in the field, though time away will not be consecutive.
Essential Functions & Duties
- Prototype and Testing: Work with more senior engineers to prototype new methods and equipment, developing test procedures and executing those test procedures.
- Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Work with existing equipment that requires maintenance for the AUV Sentry, including mechanical and electrical components, ordering of new components and writing reports on completed work.
- Operations: The engineer will be expected to support at sea operations for AUV Sentry, standing as a mechanical tech to support operations, stand watches and launch and recover the vehicle.
- Design & Drafting: The engineer will be expected to develop 2D and 3D models using CAD software for new components and equipment for the AUV.
Required Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field
Preferred Experience & Education
- Internships or Co-Op experience with relevant engineering field
- Entry-Level work experience (0-2) years
- Exposure to relevant tools/Technologies
- Demonstrated soft skills and good communication
Travel
- Up to 100 days a year
