This position will be split between the Hansel and Wankel labs assisting with several projects focused on understanding the cycling of oxygen, nutrients, and metals within stratified ponds and ocean basins. Primary duties will be (1) preparing and analyzing samples for isotopic analysis on a mass spectrometer, (2) assisting with local field work, and (3) conducting and analyzing microbial culture incubations. The position requires the RA to have proficiency in trace metal clean and/or aseptic lab techniques. The RA will be trained in specialized skills by the supervisors, including operating the mass spectrometer and other lab instruments.
This is a temporary one-year position, with the potential for extending the position dependent on available funds.
The internal working title for this position could be either Research Assistant II or Research Assistant III. The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate’s level of education & experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Growing bacterial and phytoplankton cultures
- Monitoring growth and metabolic products via a UV-Vis spectrophotometer
- Preparing field and culture samples for analysis on a mass spectrometer
- Setting up mass spectrometer runs and monitoring/assessing data quality
- Data processing using spreadsheets and statistical analysis
- Writing up methods and results
- Communicating within and between teams
- Training and assisting students and other staff
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- As deemed necessary by supervisors. RA must be willing to take on a variety of tasks regardless of levels, including lab cleaning and management.
Education & Experience
Undergraduate degree in (geo)chemistry, microbiology, or related field. Relevant work experience in microbial culturing, wet chemistry, and/or mass spectrometry is required. Experience trouble shooting instruments is desirable. The successful candidate should possess these qualities:

- Experience with data analysis, including data synthesis in spreadsheets and statistical analysis
- Ability to communicate effectively and educate new users
