Ocean Career: WHOI Research Technician II

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and independent individual with training in theoretical physics and numerical methods, especially concerning spectral models of wave turbulence and planetary flows for a Research Technician II position.

The postdoc will work with a team of PIs on an NSF-funded project, the goal of which is to map the space-time geography of internal gravity wave (IW) dissipation and mixing, and the underlying dynamics, using state-of-the-art high-resolution global and regional IW models along with theory and observations of IWs.

The objective of the PostDoc, which will utilize primarily regional ocean models, will be threefold: (1) to ascertain the impact of modeling decisions (including resolution, dissipation mechanisms, and forcing) on the accuracy of spatial and temporal distributions of IW dissipation and mixing, (2) to ascertain the impact of modeling decisions on the representation of nonlinear IW processes, and (3) to study fundamentals of nonlinear IW processes.  The candidate should have strong skills in theoretical physics, numerical methods, and model development and have expertise in internal waves and spectral models of wave and/or eddy turbulence.  They will design and implement novel IW dissipation schemes as well as diagnostics for identifying the properties of nonlinear IW interactions.

Education & Experience

Education: Ph.D.  in Physics, Applied Math or Physical Oceanography

Informal inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Kurt Polzin ([email protected]).
