Position Summary:

The Metocean Systems Technician role focuses on the design, integration, and testing of real-time Metocean (meteorological and oceanographic) monitoring systems, development of near-real-time data management and web-based display systems, preparation and operation of Metocean instrumentation, and assisting with field operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support Engineers in the design, integration, and testing of real-time Metocean monitoring systems on surface buoys, subsea mooring, seafloor platforms, or surface structures.
  • Support Engineers in the development and maintenance of real-time Metocean monitoring systems software and real time data displays on PC and web platforms.
  • Support maintenance and preparation of the Woods Hole Group and broader CLS Group Metocean measurement equipment and systems.
  • Support for field operations involving the deployment, operation and maintenance, and recovery of Metocean measurement and monitoring equipment. Sea time will be required.  Foreign travel is likely.
  • Providing support to other Teams within the Energies and Infrastructures Business Unit in collecting, analyzing, and presenting Metocean data.

  • Experience testing, configuring, uploading data from meteorological and oceanographic equipment and instrumentation.
  • Basic knowledge of circuit analysis and able to read electrical wiring diagrams, and the safe use of multimeter, oscilloscope, soldering tools and power-tools.
  • Experience using a variety of power supplies for metocean equipment including battery and solar power systems.
  • Experience communicating with sensors over RS232/422/485 protocol, SDI12, or similar.
  • Experience using satellite, GPRS, radio and Bluetooth data transmission systems.


The individual should also have strong software and coding skills that they are keen to use and develop, including:

  • Expertise in C#, Python, Matlab, SQL, HTML and Javascript ideally related to metocean data collection, management, processing and presentation (knowledge of C, PHP, Perl, R would also be of benefit) command-line tools would also be a benefit).
  • Experience working in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Experience writing database applications using .NET Framework, designing small databases on Microsoft SQL Server and managing databases and database permissions.
  • Web development experience also highly desirable.


Salary range: $50,000.00 To $60,000.00 Annually
