Intern work will be primarily associated with a RESTORE-funded project which entails a comprehensive monitoring effort of living shorelines in Alabama. Project goals are to assess the efficacy of existing living shorelines, test the utility and cost effectiveness of different monitoring methods, and provide a set of core parameters that should be consistently monitored at future living shoreline sites. Interns will be involved in sample collection and processing, and will be trained in living shoreline monitoring techniques and sample processing, including fisheries surveys, mapping surveys, and processing/analyzing remote sensing imagery in GIS applications.
There may also be opportunities to learn other ecological sampling and processing techniques. Field research will be mostly along the Alabama coast with some field days characterized by long days of physically demanding fieldwork and potentially arduous conditions. In addition, interns will be encouraged to attend seminars on current topics in marine science hosted at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and at the University of South Alabama.
These internships are available to US citizens and residents only
