The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat invites international Early Career Scientists to take part in a joint Swedish-Canadian research expedition on board icebreaker Oden in the High Arctic 2016. Preliminary dates for the expedition are 5 August–20 September 2016.

Applications must be submitted before 7 March 2016.

The joint cruise with the Swedish icebreaker Oden and the Canadian icebreaker CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, will mainly be devoted to collect marine geology data in a research program of the Geological Survey of Canada, which is a part of the Earth Science Sector of Natural Resources Canada.

The opportunity includes training in polar marine field methods and can optionally enhance the participant’s research project. Data from the program will be published as open data for public use. Participants will be connected to five identified work packages, with a senior researcher as a mentor. The mentor will not necessarily be on board.

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will evaluate the applications and make the final decisions, using the mentors as expert panel. The Secretariat strives for balance between gender, disciplines and affiliations. The selected group should be relatively “self-going” and a balance between experience and training is necessary to achieve the goals of the programme. Projects that cross over more than one work package are welcome. All prospective participants must do a medical screening before final selection.

The applicant must previously have been involved in marine and/or polar sciences and must motivate how participation in the expedition could benefit the applicant’s research project and/or research career.

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat will cover travel costs from Sweden to the embarking/disembarking port and back and living costs on board Oden. Salary or per diem will not be covered and the applicant must have an employment.
