The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) has organized a training for Fisheries Monitoring Centre (FMC) operators within the framework of the e-FishMed project, initiated by the European Commission and funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and the RESUP Algeria project (funded by the EU under the Blue Economy—Fisheries and Aquaculture (Algeria) program).

EFCA trained participants in the use and analysis of Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS), Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), and other new monitoring technologies such as satellite imagery. CSP operators from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia participated in the training. They had the opportunity to share their experiences and best practices and to visit the EFCA Coordination Centre.

This training is one of the capacity-building activities implemented by EFCA within the framework of these two projects. Other include being catalysts for enhanced cooperation in fisheries control, fighting against IUU fishing, and advancing a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean region.

The e-FishMed project aims to improve the monitoring, control, and surveillance of fishing activities through a better common understanding of the rules to be applied. To this end, the project has already delivered a common training program as a benchmark for training in fisheries control, an e-learning platform that hosts e-learning courses and training materials for the benefit of 159 fisheries officials from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia, and an exchange program that promotes collaboration and sharing of expertise between countries in the northern and southern Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic, as well as cooperation in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The RESUP Algeria project supports the Algerian authorities in their efforts to monitor conservation and management measures adopted at international, regional, and national levels and to combat IUU fishing. To this end, the project supports Algeria in updating national legislation in accordance with international and regional standards on fisheries control and surveillance and provides technical assistance for equipping fishing vessels with AIS/VMS systems and the establishment of a fisheries monitoring center.
