Coastal Communications Intern at Environmental Defense Fund

Program/Department Overview

EDF’s Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds Initiative works with diverse partners to achieve a vision where communities and ecosystems along coasts and rivers thrive with water, and are safe, equitable and prosperous places to live, work and play. The Initiative is part of EDF’s People and Nature Impact Area, which focuses on delivering food, water and climate benefits for a healthy planet.

Overall Function

The Coastal Communications Intern will provide media, writing and communications support to advance public outreach and education efforts of the program. In this role, the Coastal Communications Intern will support media relations and tracking, content development, social media and digital promotion, database management, and research needs as necessary. The Coastal Communications Intern’s work will be guided by the Senior Communications Manager, Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds.

Key Responsibilities

Tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and edit media lists using media database software.
  • Track coastal resilience-related stories in the news and produce media coverage reports for the team.
  • Research coastal resilience-related statistics and help draft supportive materials and communications collateral.
  • Support the team with developing content, including blogs, social media posts, and more to advance priority messages and reach target audiences.
  • Research new media targets, media outlets, and editorial calendar opportunities as time permits.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in/be a recent graduate of an undergraduate progam with studies in communication, journalism, English, environmental sciences and/or environmental communications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience crafting stories for different audiences across a variety of platforms.
  • Experience using a mix of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Design experience preferred, using tools such as Adobe Suite, Canva or similar platforms.
  • Experience using web-based analytic tools, such as Google Analytics, Facebook and Twitter Insights and more.
  • Interest in multi-platform storytelling, across a variety of mediums, including print/digital, audio and video.
  • Proficiency in web-based computer applications and standard desktop-based software, including the Microsoft Suite and videoconferencing platforms.
  • Not necessary, but nice to have: Experience with software and web-based programs used to produce podcasts and do audio editing.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and geographically dispersed team setting and work independently to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • General interest and knowledge of environmental communications and/or coastal issues a plus.

Location: USA Remote
Term: Up to 6 months (depending on candidate availability and staff need), ideally April - September
Hours: Full-time or part-time (20 hours/week) depending on candidate availability
