The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO), headquartered in St. Petersburg, FL is undergoing a restructuring and searching for a new Director who will be responsible for leadership, strategic planning and operation of the overall scientific program, projects, initiatives, outreach, education, and fund raising related to the mission of FIO.
The Director is expected to maintain existing affiliations and form new relationships with government, academic, and private entities focused on coastal and oceanographic issues in Florida and other regions. The Director will supervise the Marine Superintendent who manages research vessel operations. The FIO Director also supervises the director of the Florida Keys Marine Lab. It is expected that the FIO Director will have an academic background in marine or coastal science with a proven track record of administrative and leadership experience, funded research programs, and fund-raising experience. Candidates should have a working knowledge of research vessel and marine laboratory activities.
Minimum qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a field directly related to the program responsibilities and seven years of professional experience; or Master’s degree and five years of professional experience. Thorough understanding of ocean processes and experience with oral and written presentation in scientific meetings. Familiarity with management of marine research vessels and/or marine laboratories operations.
Preferred qualifications: A doctorate degree in a discipline related to oceanography and marine science and at least five years of administrative experience that includes facilities operations, program-building, and fundraising. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader, both nationally and internationally; will have demonstrated broad and diverse experience to recognize coming trends in oceanography; and will possess effective organizational, personnel management and communications skills.
This is a 12-month full-time administrative appointment. A faculty appointment may be considered for an appointee with appropriate academic credentials and accomplishments. The anticipated appointment date is July 1, 2020. The salary will be internationally competitive with excellent fringe benefits.
