Ocean Career: AIS Sea Turtle Monitor

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

Primary Function:

This project will require sea turtle monitors to implement protective measures around nesting sites of sea turtles during beach construction activities. The sea turtle monitor will be working alongside beach nourishment operations which will be conducted from April 15th through September 1st. The sea turtle monitor will conduct nightly surveys at 1-hour intervals in the construction area to ensure that any nighttime sea turtle nesting behavior is accounted for.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Monitor a designated area for sea turtle species, for up to 11 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Identification of sea turtle species, and nesting behavior/areas.
  • Documenting location and coordinate with regulators to determine if relocation of the nest is necessary.
  • Documenting behavior and other essential data, placement of predator enclosures around identified nesting sites.
  • Documenting data on logs in an organized manner.
  • Monitor a designated area for sea turtle species, for up to 10 hours per day during nightly surveys.
  • Conduct personal QA/QC checks on data collected.
  • Attend daily toolbox, HSE and project related meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have current STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), or GWO or BOSIET training completed within last 2 years.
  • Must have current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • 4-year degree with major in biological sciences
  • Must be certified by a physician as fit for work duty including:
    • Not be susceptible to chronic motion sickness
    • Ability to live in confined quarters
    • Ability to tolerate stress
    • Ability to lift objects up to 30 pounds
    • Ability to vigilantly monitor beach for 8 hours per day.
  • Must have passed an approved PSO course/training and provide certificate
  • Must be NMFS approved PSO (must provide NMFS approval letter)
  • Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair the objectivity or the appearance of objectivity
  • Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US

  • Charleston, SC

Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated. Full and Part-Time permanent positions available. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.
