Ocean Career: Arizona State University Professor in Marine Biology

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (https://newcollege.asu.edu/smns) at Arizona State University, is an interdisciplinary mathematical and natural sciences unit that encompasses computing, statistics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics; it prides itself in interdisciplinary collaborations among these research areas.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Establish a vigorous, externally-funded program of research in relevant areas, in which undergraduate students can participate
  • Teach both general and specified courses in relevant areas
  • Teach and mentor students from diverse populations
  • Contribute service to the university and profession

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or terminal degree in Marine Biology or related field at time of hire

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in fields broadly relevant to marine science, including but not limited to fields such as ecology, ecotoxicology, organismal biology, environmental science, microbial ecology, conservation, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring students in research in relevant area
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students, non-traditional, and low-income college students, and those from under-represented minorities.
  • Evidence of experience in teaching and/or course development at the college level
  • Demonstrated contribution of service to profession and university, commensurate with the candidate’s current rank
  • Interest in establishing an interdisciplinary research program through collaborative efforts
  • Record of publications in relevant area, commensurate with the candidate’s current rank
  • Record of grant writing (including proposals funded, submitted, and unfunded) in relevant area, commensurate with the candidate’s current rank

This position will contribute to the School of Mathematical & Natural Science’s programs in environmental science, biology, and toxicology. We are hiring a full-time, benefits-eligible, and open-rank tenure/tenured-track position with broad interdisciplinary expertise in fields broadly relevant to marine science (including but not limited to fields such as ecology, ecotoxicology, organismal biology, environmental, microbial ecology, conservation, etc.) that complements or supplements existing strengths in the unit.
