Ocean Career: CSA Ocean Sciences Trinidad Project Scientist

CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (CSA) is a marine science and technical services consulting firm that provides a broad range of environmental, coastal, and oceanographic services in the US and internationally. CSA’s wholly owned local subsidiary CSA Ocean Sciences (Trinidad) Ltd. (CSAOSTL) is seeking a Project Scientist 2 (PS2) ready to engage in a fast-paced, applied science role in our Trinidad office.

This PS2 will be expected to support customized, competitive, and high-quality services to industry, government, and private sector clients with efficiency and effectiveness. CSAOSTL expects adherence to our rigorous internal standards for science, operations, health and safety, quality, and professionalism. The PS2 applicant will be considered for a variety of roles ranging from operations to science support.

Position Summary: The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of CSAOSTL projects including (but not limited to) project management, client interaction, report writing, and report reviews. Emphasis will be placed on field experience, writing and data analysis. An understanding of field sampling in aquatic environments is required. This position requires periodic domestic and international travel, sometimes at short notice, during all times of the year, during both daytime and nighttime shifts if at sea, and potentially for prolonged periods (several weeks).

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the quality, validity, and accuracy of a project's science component;
  • Developing and maintaining positive client interactions;
  • Leading sampling surveys at domestic and international locations;
  • Leading or contributing to the design, analysis, and reporting phases of projects;
  • Assisting with proposal efforts;
  • Acting as a Project Manager/Assistant Project Manager on multiple active projects;
  • Performing technical editing reviews of company products;
  • Being accountable and responsible for personal safety and safety of others;
  • Attending safety meetings and satisfactorily completing all assigned training as applicable;
  • Technical supervision of staff;
  • Adhering to company standards and procedures for quality management; and
  • Accepting other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience

  • At least three years direct experience in aquatic field surveys,
  • M.Sc. degree in life sciences such as biology, biological oceanography, environmental chemistry, or a related field;
  • Experience in the scoping, writing and analysis needed in support of Environmental Impact Assessments (a writing sample will be requested of finalists);
  • Experience supporting the development of proposals;
  • Experience leading and/or managing field-based projects (minimum of 3 years’ experience);
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team;
  • Experience with sampling and working on vessels (small and/or large);
  • Strong working knowledge of computers and standard Microsoft software packages including word processing skills;

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Degree work with a concentration in marine environments;
  • At sea experience surveying shallow and deep water offshore environments;
  • Experience with operation of marine survey and environmental sampling equipment;
  • Project Management;
  • Experience with statistical analysis;
  • Safety and environmental hazard training; and
  • Understanding of data integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
