Ocean Career: Konservasi Indonesia Fisheries Management Specialist

Konservasi Indonesia (KI) is seeking a qualified and motivated individual as The Fisheries Management Science Specialist. This position would be a part of the Ocean Science team that provides technical, scientific, and analytical advice on fish biology, fisheries ecology, and fisheries management to strengthen KI ocean programs and scientific-based recommendations to the governments of Indonesia at national and sub-national levels. The selected candidate should initiate and develop Konservasi Indonesia fisheries programs that embrace biology, ecology, fishing technology, and socioeconomic aspects. Likewise, by virtue of field data collected by Konservasi Indonesia field programs and robust scientific analysis, they should be able to provide recommendations on the aspects of fisheries management, quota-based fisheries, connectivity between fisheries production and habitat/species protection, and strategies pertinent to sustainable fisheries development. The selected candidate guidance and direction on the field program implementation and should collaborate with other ocean scientists and other program leads. They must have strong analytical and writing skills and capacity to write and publish scientific papers and reports. They do not supervise staff and will report to the Senior Ocean Program Adviser as their supervisor. They will be based in the Konservasi Indonesia Jakarta office and intensively travel to other regions of Indonesia.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, guide, and help implementation of fisheries programs.
  • Write proposals and communicate with donors and other stakeholders.
  • Develop collaboration with scientists from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), universities, provincial research and development institutions, and Conservation International scientists.
  • Carry out rigorous and robust scientific research.
  • Write and publish scientific papers and reports.
  • Monitor and analyze the impact of Konservasi Indonesia fisheries programs, protection-production programs, MPA programs, and aquaculture programs.
  • Serve as a technical contact with BRIN, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs, and other government agencies.
  • Ensure consistency with KI’s intellectual property rights before publication and/or release of data;
  • Work closely with key internal and external partners to disseminate updates and information.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to organizing technical meetings, workshops, and other scientific forums.
  • Maintain project files and related databases. Secure information and data with appropriate back-up procedures.
  • Help disseminate scientific results and outputs to the national and international medias.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. (doctoral) degree in fisheries science, marine ecology, marine biology, fishing technology, or related discipline applicable to fisheries management.
  • Ten years of relevant experience, including fieldwork on various aspects of fisheries, aquaculture, and habitat/species conservation.
  • Highly organized and able to work well under pressure;
  • Ability to work in a team environment, communicate updates to team members, and work cooperatively with internal and external partners;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia;
  • Strong statistical, coding, or modeling skills;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Literate and master cutting-edge software and analytical methods.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven research experience, with peer-reviewed publications or grey literature authorship;
  • Candidates must be ready to come up with bold research ideas;
  • Having experience working on an interdisciplinary research project;
  • Excellent interpersonal, science communication, presentation, and management skills;
  • Dependable, enthusiastic, versatile, and responsible;
  • Collaborative, yet decisive, and able to work independently;
  • Strong work ethic, organizational, financial, and time management skills;
  • Effective relationship builder exercising tact, sensitivity, and discretion at all times.
