Ocean Career: Laboratory Assistant at UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory

To care for the ESA-Listed endangered species White Abalone, which is on the brink of extinction.

The White Abalone is an ESA-listed endangered species which was overfished in the 20th century and is now on the brink of extinction. Out planting of captively bred animals is the essential method of saving the abalone as part of recovery efforts for the species.

Under the supervision of the White Abalone Captive Breeding Program Director, conduct project and data management, experimental maintenance, animal care, and facilities maintenance for Bodega Marine Laboratory’s (BML) White Abalone Captive Breeding Program.

The position is 100% (Full Time) and is located at UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory in Bodega Bay, CA.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting Requirements up to 40lbs

  • Noise Conditions: Moderate Noise Conditions – Frequently
  • Physical Demands (Elements Exposed to): Heat/Cold – frequently
  • Equipment Used to Perform the Duties: Cleaners - occasionally, Computer and Peripheral Equipment - occasionally, Copier - occasionally, Mops/Brooms - occasionally, Face Shield, Surgical Face Mask, Gloves (rubber, latex)

Work Environment

  • Work occasional evenings/nights/weekends/holiday including overtime on short notice to meet operational needs
  • Work outside occasionally
  • Must be able to lift 40lbs
  • Must be able climb step stools and ladders
  • Must be able to work in cramped spaces with wet, uneven flooring
  • Must be able to sit and work for long periods at a computer.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Upper division college level coursework in Marine Science, Ecology, Aquaculture, or a related discipline.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Communication skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Experience with animal care, laboratory equipment maintenance, and/or marine aquaculture
  • Careful laboratory skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with various software programs for data management, image analysis, and reporting (e.g. excel, graphing procedures, statistical analysis, ImageJ, PowerPoint, R).
  • Experience collecting and managing data.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Experience leading a group or team, and/or managing a laboratory or animal care facility
  • Experience working with state or federal permits
  • Experience preparing reports and delivering presentations
  • Experience conducting independent research
  • Experience spawning and culturing marine invertebrates
  • Experience in or on the water (e.g., on small boats and/or with freediving or SCUBA)

Special Requirements

Salary Range: $23.23/hr. - $27.66/hr.
