Ocean Career: Mobile Baykeeper Oyster Project Manager

As the Oyster Project Manager, you will spearhead Mobile Baykeeper’s efforts to restore the oyster population in Mobile Bay. Working under the direction of the Baykeeper, you will manage oyster restoration projects, including the Impact 100 Oyster Gardening Project and other projects aimed at significantly enhancing the bay’s oyster habitat and ensuring our waterways thrive.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership and Management

  • Lead the execution and expansion of oyster restoration projects, adhering to science-based best practices and Mobile Baykeeper’s strategic goals
  • Drive team efforts towards the successful cultivation and deployment of oysters within Mobile Bay, maximizing growth and restoration potential

Project Development and Innovation

  • Develop and manage innovative restoration projects, incorporating new technologies and methodologies to bolster oyster populations
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to scale up restoration efforts effectively

Resource Management and Reporting

  • Oversee the financial aspects of restoration projects, including budgeting, grant management, and reporting
  • Ensure accurate tracking of project progress & regular reporting on key results

Team Development and Oversight

  • Recruit, train, and lead a team dedicated to the project’s operational and strategic objectives
  • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment, ensuring high team morale and retention

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of field experience in oyster aquaculture, marine science, or a related natural resource management field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects in bays and coastal environments, with a track record of achieving quantitative goals
  • Competency in operating vessels, managing field equipment, and applying scientific principles to restoration work
  • Relevant experience in project management is preferred

Performance Indicators

  • Achievement of project milestones, including the successful cultivation and deployment of oyster populations in Mobile Bay
  • Scaling of oyster restoration efforts through the Oyster Garden Program and additional innovative projects
  • Retention of project partners and property owners, contributing to the overall growth and success of the program

Day in the Life

  • Overseeing maintenance & monitoring of oyster gardens
  • Working with subject matter experts and team members to imagine, develop, and implement new projects to scale oyster growing efforts
  • Engaging with stakeholders and partners to align efforts and resources
