Ocean Career: Open Ocean Robotics Data Scientist

Operating on the ocean around the world from Victoria BC, Open Ocean Robotics is a rapidly growing start-up transforming how we understand our oceans through better data. We are leaders in solar-powered autonomous boats, also called uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), that voyage across a wide variety of challenging ocean environments.

We’re driven by a pioneering spirit to push boundaries and make the seemingly impossible possible. Together, we can achieve that goal, growing our team of highly skilled people and offering you the opportunity to tackle big challenges with solutions that make a difference.

Are you passionate about the oceans, data collection and data sciences such as machine learning, computer vision and audio analysis? Are you interested in advancing autonomous navigation and more intelligent edge computing, then we want to hear from you!

The successful candidate will work closely with our lead data scientist to build detection and manipulation algorithms and aid with machine learning training across images, video, audio, and raw data sources.

We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. We encourage applicants who reflect diversity in thinking and background as we continue to develop our culture of inclusiveness for all.

Co-Op Data Scientist Wanted

We are seeking a Co-op Data Scientist to be part of our team during the fall. Ideally, you have a passion for data science and machine learning, with a love of the ocean and robotics.

As the co-op Data Scientist, you will help take guidance from the lead data scientist to grow and maintain data science technology at Open Ocean Robotics. From training models for vessel detection and identification to using audio to detect marine mammals or human activity to understanding trends in oceanographic data (e.g., water temperatures and currents) and detecting anomalies, this position will participate many different forms of edge computing. This position will help improve current models, to solve some of our more challenging problems in the areas of computer vision, underwater acoustics, and ocean science.

This role will use data science best practices to developing models and implementing data processing pipelines. This includes cleaning and annotating data, training and evaluating the performance of models, and deploying the models on edge devices.

Any experience with unmanned systems such as UAV, USV or other autonomous vehicles would be considered a bonus for your application.
