Ocean Career: PICRC Researcher/Science Officer

Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is seeking applicants for the position of a Researcher/Science Officer.

Position Purpose:

The Researcher/Science Officer for the PNMS will work with the PICRC Research Director, PNMS Program Manager, PICRC researchers and Communication and Outreach officers, other scientists and stakeholders within Palau and internationally, to develop and conduct research activities for the PNMS, disseminate research results and implement the PNMS Science & Monitoring Strategy. The PNMS Science & Monitoring Strategy outlines key research areas and strategies and will be used to guide and inform the management of the PNMS to track conservation success and monitor key indicators over time.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and conducting research activities in the PNMS, identifying opportunities for research collaborations and related projects development.
  • Assisting in securing funding to lead research in the PNMS.
  • Collaborating and coordinating with scientists conducting research in Palau and similar Large Scale MPAs that are relevant to the PNMS and the Domestic Fishing Zone.
  • Interpreting scientific research results and information regarding the PNMS and providing to the Communication and Outreach Department for dissemination to the public and other relevant stakeholders; assist in developing and recommending appropriate conservation management measures for the Domestic Fishing Zone.
  • Providing the necessary scientific support to implement the PNMS Science & Monitoring Strategy through collaborative arrangements, inter-agency communications, meetings, workshops and other relevant platforms.
  • Other duties including conducting nearshore research as needed and as assigned by supervisor.
