Ocean Career: UKHO Senior Geospatial Information Specialist—Tides

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is seeking a Senior Geospatial Information Specialist in Tides to join our team. UKHO are looking for someone with knowledge of tidal theory, tidal analysis, and tidal computations, understanding of vertical reference datums, knowledge of hydrographic surveying practices, techniques, and equipment functionality (such as tide gauges and current meters). Computer programming skills in Python/R is desirable but not essential. Awareness of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), particularly the S-100 product specification developments of the Hydrographic Services and Standards Committee (HSSC) would be an advantage.

This role will sit in the Tides team, alongside Geodesy and Remote Sensing, among a wider group of Scientific teams. The roles sit within the Scientific Analysis Group, which is a center of excellence responsible for the provision of advice to UKHO; wider MOD and the maritime community on matters relating to tides and geodesy.

This role offers hybrid working. You would be required to be in the office dependent on business needs, approx. 60% of the time. Onsite work could include handling defense information, researching historical records in the archive, hosting visitors etc. There will also be training that requires office attendance, particularly in the first few weeks.

As our Senior Geospatial Information Specialist, you will:

  • Be responsible the analysis and processing of tidal survey data into a range of databases for onward use in products and services.
  • Be responsible for updating the tides databases and data management processes to meet the requirements of the UKHO, Royal Navy and other partners.
  • Validate and verify the tidal deliverables of hydrographic ‘Reports of Survey’ (ROS).
  • Have the opportunity to carry out development and testing of data/systems and work with the Tides subject matter experts.
  • Be responsible for maintaining and updating processes and documentation for Tides. The post holder will take the lead on such work and engage with large groups of stakeholders from across the business.
  • Act as the Tides data steward in accordance with the Scientific Analysis Group Data Governance responsibilities.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Completion of the ADMIRALTY Tide Tables (ATT), in collaboration with our publishing team
  • Contribution to defense products and expertise requests.
  • Verification of tidal data to support our products.
  • Sharing knowledge and skills across your peers, offering coaching and development.
  • Participation in presentations and technical discussions on tide-related subjects.
  • Responding to enquiries from professionals in the maritime industry and other related disciplines, including questions from the general public.
  • Involvement and liaison with the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Tidal Working Groups, namely the Tides, Water Levels and Surface Currents Working Group (TWCWG) and the North Sea Hydrographic Commission Tidal Working Group (NSHC TWG) (working with the Tides Technical Lead on tasks relating to these groups).

Required skills and experience

UKHO is looking for candidates who enjoy working as part of a small, specialist team, but who are keen to share their specialist knowledge and experience across the business and with internal and external stakeholders and customers. The ability and confidence to build effective working relationships and communicate with a broad range of audiences will be important in the role.

At the Senior Geospatial Information Specialist level, you will be able to demonstrate and utilize technical expertise within the tidal science domain, applying this to the development of processes, continual improvement of existing processes, technologies and tools, and the stewardship of tidal data.
