Ocean Career: Virginia Institute of Marine Science GIS Specialist

The mission of VIMS (Virginia Institute of Marine Science) is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service.

VIMS’ strategic sections are committed to the development of resilient systems through a focus on three grand challenges, ensuring science for stewardship of:

  1. Ecosystem Health: connecting physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic systems to address environmental and community vulnerabilities
  2. Natural Resources: providing translational science for sustainable management of coastal socio-ecological systems, especially fisheries and aquaculture
  3. Coastal and Ocean Processes: connecting global trends and local drivers to understand and address environmental change

    Position Summary

    The SAV (submerged aquatic vegetation) Monitoring Program supports the VIMS objectives of research, advisory service, and education in the field of marine science by providing an annual survey of submersed aquatic vegetation in the Chesapeake Bay and major tidal tributaries, advising Virginia management agencies on issues related to SAV, and conducting research directed at better understanding SAV in Chesapeake Bay.

    The GIS Specialist supports the SAV Monitoring Program by creating mosaics from the orthorectified imagery using ArcGIS Software and providing GIS analysis and programing.

    Specific duties:

    • Creates orthorectified digital imagery using Erdas Photogrammetry Software
    • Creates mosaics from the orthorectified digital imagery using ArcGIS Software
    • Tracks progress. Assists in updating data in Access database
    • Creates and modifies python program code to support the monitoring program

    Required Qualifications

    EDUCATION:

    • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience to the position

      COMPETENCIES:

      • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in GIS software
      • Strong proficiency in a variety of software applications to include Microsoft applications (particularly with Access)
      • Effective interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to work in highly collaborative-team based environment
      • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate and concise records
      • Demonstrated ability to work independently, following established procedures and protocols
      • Excellent organization skills, with the ability to work accurately with a close attention to detail

      EXPERIENCE:

      • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro
      • Familiarity with remote sensing
      • Experience creating python programs for ArcGIS Pro

      Preferred Qualifications

      COMPETENCIES:

      • Knowledge of orthorectification, and mosaicking methods and processes, with the ability to create orthorectified digital imagery, produce and interpret mosaicked imagery to create maps
      • Demonstrated knowledge of Erdas Imagine and Photogrammetry

      EXPERIENCE:

      • Demonstrated experience using MS Access
      • Demonstrated experience with remote sensing
      • Experience creating mosaics from the orthorectified imagery using ArcGIS Software
      • Experience creating Python modules and working with Github
