The Monterey Bay Aquarium Career Development Pathway (CDP) program is a rich learning resource for interns and externs, enabling them to partner with the Aquarium in pursuit of our shared DEI objectives and take our mission to the next level.
Targeting underrepresented communities of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), the CDP will provide eligible undergraduate students with meaningful work experience under the direction of an Aquarium mentor. The CDP program is outcomes-based, requiring a project report at the conclusion of the program, further documenting the participants’ growth along their developmental pathway.
Position Description
The 2022 Ocean Ecosystems Research Intern will support research focusing on U.S. and California Ocean Conservation under the supervision of a Research Biologist in the Conservation and Science Division. The goals of the Conservation and Science Division are to protect and restore California Ocean Ecosystems, improve the sustainability of global fisheries and aquaculture, reduce sources of ocean plastic pollution, and combat climate change impacts on ocean health. The 2022 Ocean Ecosystems Research Intern will conduct a literature review and data analysis to support coastal ecosystem research related to the Division’s sea otter conservation goals. At the end of the internship, they will produce a project deliverable to summarize and report the outcomes of their research. Required Skills and Experience
- Must submit a resume of courses and/or experience related to the position
- Currently enrolled and in good academic standing as an undergraduate or graduate student at a Minority-Serving Institution.

Desired Skills and Experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Previous experience or coursework in conservation, marine science/ecology, animal behavior, and/or environmental studies
- Familiarity with statistical analysis
- Familiarity with ArcGIS and R programming
