A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for three part time Biological Laboratory Technicians to support aquaculture projects.
Primary Function:
Technicians will support program staff and perform scientific technician duties as requested. Technicians will perform basic tasks including compiling and extracting data from a variety of prescribed sources and providing other program support as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support shellfish hatchery facilities, raceway system, shellfish genetic lines facilities as well as the shellfish genetics research area.
- Understand safety procedures in the laboratory,
- Observe samples under a microscope.
- Use appropriate molecular techniques to characterize disease and genetics in samples.
- Assist with sample preparation, qPCR and metabarcoding, outsourcing for sequencing and analyses as needed.
- Use microbalances and macro balances according to the standard operating procedure.
- Use calipers to measure bivalves.
- Assist with bivalve spawning, larval rearing, juvenile and adult shellfish maintenance in a hatchery setting.
- Assist with algal feeding for larval, juvenile, and adult shellfish in the hatchery and in experiments.
- Clean and maintain infrastructure (buckets, tubes, trays) used to hold animals long-term or for experiments.
- Assist with repairs and upgrades to the hatchery and other spaces at the Milford/other lab used for experiments and animal rearing.
- Attend scientific and educational conferences to present research material and network on current and future projects (as appropriate).
- Incumbent will learn and contribute to procedures involved in genetics and husbandry and operation of support systems, including data collection and archiving.
- Mentoring by staff technical experts will be provided, along with detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents
- Incumbents will implement daily work plans provided by staff mentors and keep detailed records of all activities.
Compensation:
Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on the employee’s experience. This is a part–time position working 10-15 hours a week.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school or undergraduate students
