Ocean Career: AIMS Coral Conservation Aquaculture Technician

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) has developed technology to support coral conservation aquaculture at scale. Known as ReefSeed this new technology is a movable containerized version of our coral spawning systems. We are seeking a technical expert to be responsible for on the ground coordinating of the building, commissioning and operations of the technology for uptake by the restoration industry, practitioners and community groups in Australia and overseas.

Applying your knowledge and expertise as an expert for the ReefSeed systems that will be developed for large research programs (Pilot Deployment Program and TED Audacious [Pacific Project]), you will be the liaison for on-the-ground activities of trades and AIMS staff to deliver timely builds, participate in the build of aquaculture components of the systems, supervise and coordinate the installation and components of the systems for integration and commissioning of systems at deployment sites nationally and internationally, and lead the spawning technical operations throughout the early life cycle of corals.

You will support the industry uptake and successful deployment of the technology with a key role in providing specialist training of these systems for 3rd party operators and partner organizations, supporting deployment activities, and coordinating the manufacture and assembly of sub-systems to industry partner facilities.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have significant experience in coral research and/or aquaculture, with a tertiary qualification in Marine Science or Aquaculture. They will have strong technical know-how in aquaculture systems designs and build or similar, including piping and tank set up, coupled with strong practical experience managing captive coral spawning (or marine invertebrates with planktonic larval stages may also be considered).

Well-developed communication skills and project management expertise will be critical to success in this role, as you will draw on your experience managing and coordinating tradespersons and stakeholders and commissioning complex aquaculture systems in remote locations. Ideally you will be experienced organizing and conducting field work in remote locations in Australia and overseas.

Salary range: AIMS AOF Level 4 salary ($97,503 to $110,957 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation
