Ocean Career: MBL Research Assistant

The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking applicants for a full-time Research Assistant position with the Josephine Bay Paul Center. The successful applicant will contribute to the molecular biology of projects exploring the evolution and genomics of microbes and marine organisms.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operation of Sanger and Illumina sequencing platforms;
  • Operation of 10X Genomics Chromium Controller;
  • Single cell/nuclear library preparation;
  • DNA extraction;
  • PCR;
  • Construction of Illumina sequencing libraries;
  • QA/QC of sequencing libraries and sequencing reactions;
  • Use of informatics software packages.


Potential participation as a course TA for college and high school level enrichment courses.

Duties and salary will be commensurate with relevant experience.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with training in basic molecular biology (nucleic acid preparation, PCR, etc). Must have one or more years of laboratory experience (as undergraduate research or full employment). The successful candidate will be expected to work independently after initial training period, but to be able to work well with others as part of larger research projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Illumina sequencing, 10X genomics single cell/nuclear library preparation, familiarity with Unix command line scripts and programs.

Physical Requirements:

Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals. Occasional lifting of heavy objects (<30 lbs).
