Rathbun Fish Hatchery is dedicated to enhancing Iowa's recreational fishing opportunities through the propagation, culture, and distribution of sport fish. Rathbun Fish Hatchery is seeking a passionate and experienced Hatchery Manager to lead its team and ensure the successful production and distribution of various fish species. The Hatchery Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of fish propagation, culture, and distribution to meet the recreational needs of Iowa's angling public. The role involves technical and administrative supervision, fish culture and distribution, team leadership, and facility maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

Fish Production:

  • Lead propagation and culture programs for Channel Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge, Paddlefish, and Walleyes.
  • Develop production plans and conduct pre-production season planning meetings.
  • Coordinate Walleye spawning activities and fry production.
  • Ensure fish production meets targets (90-120% of requested numbers).
  • Implement disease prevention and control measures.
  • Maintain inventories of fish feed, chemicals, and other supplies.
  • Complete INAD study documentation and annual/quarterly production reports.
  • Maintain detailed fish production records.
  • Collaborate with research personnel on optimizing fish culture practices.

Fish Harvest and Distribution:

  • Oversee harvest and distribution of various fish species to specified locations.
  • Plan and schedule fish distribution trips efficiently.
  • Coordinate with biologists and drivers for timely fish delivery.
  • Estimate fish size and ensure safe transport densities.
  • Ensure fish are distributed according to HACCP plans and stocking requests.

Team Leadership:

  • Provide on-site direction and supervision to hatchery staff.
  • Establish and oversee work schedules, including weekend and standby schedules.
  • Promote a teamwork atmosphere and professional growth among staff.
  • Ensure staff access to necessary training and continuing education.
  • Oversee training and work quality, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Facility and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Ensure buildings and grounds are well-maintained.
  • Maintain equipment and vehicles according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Assist in maintenance tasks as needed.

Administrative Duties:

  • Perform computer-related tasks, including email, time sheets, and procurement.
  • Follow DNR Budget & Finance purchasing policies.
  • Complete purchase orders and vendor claims.
  • Ensure timely submission of procurement card and travel reimbursement documentation.
  • Attend fisheries bureau, section, and regional DNR meetings.
  • Demonstrate initiative, customer service, and ethical conduct.
  • Manage multiple and changing priorities effectively.

Outreach and Assistance:

  • Assist with special projects for fish management, research, wildlife bureau, and law enforcement.
  • Conduct hatchery tours, presentations, and aquatic education programs.
  • Respond to public inquiries and assist hatchery visitors.
  • Participate in meetings to improve hatchery operations and resource management.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders and the public.

Professional Development:

  • Stay updated on the latest fish culture practices and technologies.
  • Attend and participate in professional meetings and training sessions.
  • Present at professional meetings and write articles for publication as requested.

Essential Functions

  • Leads a team of fisheries professionals and directs their daily activities
  • Plans and conducts fish culture propagation, production, and distribution plans to ensure that Fisheries Bureau goals are attained.
  • Identifies and solves problems using advanced knowledge of fish culture science to maintain or enhance hatchery production.
  • Communicates fish culture activities effectively both orally and in writing, including formal presentations to colleagues, professional groups, and the public.
  • Lifts and carries equipment and supplies that weigh up to 50 pounds and performs physical labor, outdoors, in any type of weather and in rugged terrain.

Compensation: $54,766.40 to $83,012.80 annually
