Ocean Career: MBA Marine Survey Technician

Join the Marine Biological Association’s (MBA) Operations Team and contribute to the world’s most extensive and longest‑running survey of marine plankton. The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) Survey has operated since 1931 and continues to provide vital insights into climate change, fisheries, biodiversity, and the impact of microplastics. From our base in Plymouth, we work closely with the merchant shipping community, who tow CPRs across global shipping routes. CPR units are prepared, dispatched, and returned to our workshops, where they are carefully maintained and serviced.

We are looking to recruit a Marine Survey Technician who will play a central role in ensuring our CPR fleet and associated equipment remain safe, functional, and ready for deployment. Working as part of a small, dedicated team, you will help maintain and oversee a global network of volunteer merchant vessels that support the Survey.

Essential experience/skills/qualifications:

  • Experience of mechanical assembly
  • Good practical skills and attention to detail
  • Experience of working as part of a small team with a flexible and adaptable approach
  • Working safely in a workshop environment
  • Planning and organising skills
  • UK driving licence
  • IT skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

Desirable experience/skills/qualifications:

  • Level 2-3 mechanical technician or similar qualification (or demonstrable experience)
  • Hands-on interest in technology and instrumentation (e.g. sensors, electronics, data loggers)
  • Light fabrication including soldering and welding
  • Forklift operations / forklift operator’s certificate (training will be given)
  • Working with hazardous substances – COSHH
  • Knowledge of lifting operations and lifting equipment
  • Use of workshop equipment e.g. drill, lathe, grinder and press

Key responsibilities and skills

  • Preparing CPRs and associated items for deployment for data collection at sea
  • Carry out examinations of tow equipment prior to dispatch to volunteer ships
  • Planned maintenance of CPRs
  • Identify faults and carry out repairs on CPRs and associated equipment
  • Unloading and retrieving samples from the CPRs on their return to our facilities
  • Booking transport, receipt and dispatch of CPRs
  • Keeping workshops and yards clean and tidy and compliant with relevant regulation and site requirements
  • Use of IT systems and manual systems for record management
  • Occasional driving duties to our facilities, UK ports and local suppliers
  • Occasional overseas travel to assist the Survey Operations Manager in the set up of volunteer ships and shoreside volunteer networks
  • Working safely with hazardous substances
  • Conduct all duties in safe and proper manner adhering to all relevant regulations and safe systems of work
  • When trained: operate the counter balance forklift and hand propelled stacker
  • Assist in delivery of training courses
  • Data entering of completed tow information in to console
  • Resupply runs of equipment and samples between MBA sites within Plymouth
  • To be trained to provide cover for other technician positions within the Ops Team including the Filter Silk Preparation Technician
  • Out of hours work as required to meet ships’ schedules
  • Undertake any other tasks identified as being within the job holder’s capabilities

Salary range: Grade 2 £25,249 to Grade 2 £29,588 per annum depending on experience
