Ocean Career: RSPB Programme Manager

This role will support delivery of the UK Marine Programme and strategic programs for seabirds and UK seas that contribute towards delivering the RSPB's strategy to 2030. The role sits within the RSPB's Global Conservation team and within the Policy and Advocacy Directorate but will work with colleagues across multiple teams and across the four UK countries with an emphasis on supporting change to drive resilient seas and healthy seabird populations.

What’s the role about?

UK seabirds and the seas they depend upon are in trouble. Through this role you will coordinate the activities of the RSPB’s UK marine program board working towards building resilient seas and thriving seabird populations through provision of safe places to breed, feed and reduced mortality. This role will sit within the policy and advocacy team, managed by the Head of UK marine policy and will be crucial to ensuring the right governance structure and frameworks are in place to keep the program on track and aligned with the organizations strategic priorities.

The role will work with individuals within and external to the organization seeking to maximize RSPB impact to drive change in the marine environment. The role will ensure delivery of strategic priorities across Marine Protected Areas, fisheries and renewables workstreams occur in a timely and effective manner, producing relevant program documentation and outcome reporting.  In additional the role will draw together the RSPBs expertise from multiple teams, including policy, operational and science teams. As such it requires a clear communicator, an ability to organize work to manageable targets, take responsibility for overall progress against our strategic objectives, manage where relevant program budgets and manage and support activities and events in a timely manner working with the wider team.

The role is home based and location is flexible within the UK. Flexible start date. Please note if required the role may be drawn upon to provide program management support for the wider Global Conservation policy and advocacy team if needed.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Ability to manage programs and demonstrable ability to manage changes within programs.
  • Attention to detail and ability to understand financial systems.
  • Demonstrable leadership ability, able to lead without line management authority.
  • An ability to produce clear written communications.
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to find creative solutions.
  • Able to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Logical & methodical, analytical and a good eye for detail.
  • Proven time management and organizational skills
  • Experience of working to a standard project management approach (eg RSPB Project Management Framework, Prince II).
