A Shared Intelligence Engine for the Ocean Enterprise

By Hans VanSumeren, Senior Director, Ocean Enterprise Initiative, MTS

The ocean is one of the planet’s fastest-scaling economic frontiers. It underpins global trade, energy resilience, and climate stability. Yet despite its pivotal role in planetary and economic stability, it remains one of the most under-capitalized climate verticals. As the ocean economy expands, seizing this momentum requires clarity, connectivity, and intelligence across every corner of the landscape.

That is exactly what BlueConneX brings to the Ocean Enterprise: a shared, trusted place to see the entire ecosystem—turning data and innovation into coordinated, investable, high-impact outcomes, making this critical sector visible, and helping organizations find partners, spot opportunities, and scale trusted solutions faster.

Elevating a Market Sector

BlueConneX was developed by the Ocean Enterprise Initiative, with funding support from NOAA. For the past four years, the Ocean Enterprise Initiative’s signature Dialogues with Industry series, developed with partners including the Global Ocean Observing System, Kongsberg Discovery, and L3Harris, has generated compelling insights and actionable recommendations for maturing the global Ocean Enterprise. Our goal is simple: elevate the Ocean Enterprise so it is recognized as an integral market sector of the ocean economy.

These conversations translate directly into progress toward strengthening and maturing markets for ocean observation. Through them, we’ve gained a sharper picture of emerging demand, market-aggregation opportunities, and pathways to scale technologies faster—driving innovation, accelerating time to market, and ultimately underscoring the need for a tool like BlueConneX. Designed with the community, for the community—and built on interviews and conversations with stakeholders across the Ocean Enterprise—BlueConneX was purpose-built to reveal the full scope and market potential of the Ocean Enterprise.

Launched in April 2026, BlueConneX is not just a directory, database, or news feed; it provides a strategic intelligence layer grounded in robust, curated information:

  • Comprehensive Intelligence Base – Explore organizations, market reports, and news; map connections across the ocean information value chain; and surface opportunities and emerging technologies—curated through custom-built web scrapers and ingestion pipelines.
  • Complete Landscape Visibility – See the full ecosystem in one place, helping professionals, innovators, and investors navigate with greater clarity and confidence.

An Evolving Platform

BlueConneX will continue to grow in depth, coverage, and usefulness as more users engage. Planned enhancements include broader global participation; stronger taxonomy and filters; richer relationship mapping and trend analysis; improved AI-assisted discovery; additional data sources and partner integrations; and sharper analytics around market signals.

Trust and future-proofing remain core to the platform’s functionality, and we are committed to transparency, responsible AI, and stewardship of the quality and credibility that BlueConneX offers as a decision-support tool. Throughout its lifecycle, the platform will continually improve as the community uses it and helps guide priorities.
