Five Parameters, One Probe

Coastal and nearshore monitoring programs often rely on a stack of single-parameter instruments to track water quality and site conditions—one logger for temperature, a separate meter for turbidity, another for current—each with its own mooring point, maintenance schedule, and data-download routine. PEBL’s GrowProbe 4 consolidates five of those measurements into a single moored unit, at GBP 1,795 ex VAT.

Temperature runs 0 to 50°C at 0.1°C resolution. Turbidity reads 0 to 100 NTU at 0.5 NTU resolution, with two-point calibration to 40 NTU using the formazin standard PEBL supplies—a range that covers routine baseline monitoring as well as short, sharp turbidity spikes from tidal resuspension or nearby dredging work, without needing a second instrument. Light covers 0 to 100,000 lux. Current comes from tilt, 0 to 85 degrees at half a degree, which is roughly 0 to 2.5 knots, with heading to 0.5 degrees. Everything lands in one CSV with a timestamp on every row.

You Choose How Hard It Works

Logging runs from ten readings a second down to one a day, with burst and averaging modes, and at a 30-minute rate, a single charge lasts up to 320 days. That flexibility lets a single deployment cover both a slow seasonal baseline and a short, high-frequency capture window around a specific tidal or weather event, without swapping instruments or reprogramming a monitoring network.

The unit recharges to 80% in four hours, allowing it to be retrieved, downloaded, and redeployed on the same day.

Constructed with a corrosion-free acetal housing and titanium bolts, the unit is rated for demanding environments. Every recorded file includes embedded temperature and orientation data, providing critical evidence if a mooring shifts during a storm. That kind of embedded record can matter well beyond the initial deployment, offering documentation useful for insurance claims, mooring redesign, or reporting back to a funding body or regulator.

For a Multitude of Environments

Customers have successfully deployed GrowProbes at coastal aquaculture, restoration, and offshore renewable sites. In aquaculture settings, the combination of turbidity and current data can help operators track feed dispersal and sediment build-up around pens; in coastal restoration and offshore renewable projects, the same readings support baseline water-quality records and siltation monitoring around construction or cable-laying work.

Setup can be managed from a phone or laptop in the field without requiring a cellular signal or internet connection. Data retrieval is flexible, supporting app downloads, WiFi transfers to PEBL’s online portal, or direct access via the SD card.
