Ocean Career: AIMS Experimental Field and Laboratory Technician

An opportunity has arisen to join the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) team as an Experimental Field and Laboratory Research Technician for a 4-month period to provide high quality technical assistance to support research projects in the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP)’s Coral Aquaculture and Deployment team and the Woppaburra Coral project. As an experienced technician you will play a key role in a number of research activities for these projects including:

  • Supporting coral breeding, propagation and experiments within SeaSim, including delivering data sets;
  • Undertaking all aspects of field deployment including assisting with field experiments, fieldwork;
  • organization and preparation, and deployment, censusing and data collection in the field;
  • Collecting and curating samples from the field and laboratory;
  • Maintaining lab books, managing data sets and servicing oceanographic instruments;
  • Carrying out laboratory analysis and aquaculture maintenance; and
  • Supervising and providing guidance to interns and trainees.

About you

You will have completed a bachelor's degree in marine science, coral biology, ecology or similar, which is supported by your experience with both laboratory and field research activities. You will be experienced and confident organizing and undertaking fieldwork research under remote or difficult conditions, and able to meet AIMS restricted scientific diver requirements.

Experienced in the setup and maintenance of coral aquaculture systems and experiments, and the collection and curation of samples and data, you will be able to generate experimental data using one or several approaches including ecological, physiological and image-based methods in the laboratory and the field. You will be a strong communicator, with well-developed written communication and interpersonal skills which have been proven working in large team environments and producing high quality written reports and manuscripts.

  • AIMS AOF Level 3E salary ($70,822 to $88,786 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation

Salary: AOF Level 3E salary ($70,822 to $88,786 per annum) plus 15.4% superannuation
