Ocean Career: Benchmark Genetics Senior Geneticist

Benchmark Genetics is a leading provider of genetically improved Atlantic salmon, Penaeus vannamei, and Genetic Services to the global aquaculture industry. The Benchmark stocks are developed in state-of-the-art multitrait selection programs with nucleus operations in Europe and the Americas. Benchmark Genetics runs extensive research and development programs, including major focus on trait development, genomics, and reproductive technologies.

Job Summary:

The Senior Geneticist will be responsible for operational and research activities to support and develop the global salmon breeding programs. This will include overseeing the disease challenge experiments and associated datasets to develop disease resistance traits and the coordination and analyses of genomic data. In addition, the Senior Geneticist will contribute to R&D projects, helping to ensure the company remains at the forefront of applied aquaculture genetics globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and coordination of large-scale fish trials, especially disease trials, to support salmon breeding programs globally
  • Coordinate and analyze large genotype datasets and associated databases to support the implementation of genomic selection
  • Contribute to optimization of Benchmark Genetics’ in-house salmon breeding program design and operations.
  • Contribute to strategic R&D projects, including external collaborative projects, research and development licenses, and tax relief projects.
  • Actively participate in collaboration across the Genetics team.
  • Participate as a regular member of Benchmark’s Genetics Interest Group, and Global Salmon Breeding Program group and contribute to Product Steering Team meetings as requested.

Qualifications and experience

  • A higher degree (MSc or PhD) in animal breeding or a relevant area
  • Several years of experience in breeding program operations and/or research and development
  • Strong background in several of the following areas: statistics, bioinformatics, genomics, fish biology, fish pathology, quantitative genetics
  • Experience and knowledge of aquaculture breeding (desirable)
