Ocean Career: Monterey Bay Aquarium Dive Officer

Under limited supervision, supervise all public dive program activities including the Underwater Explorers (UE) program, presentation dives and special event dives. Monitor and evaluate public dive program diving activities to ensure regulatory compliance with the Aquarium’s Diving Safety and Exhibit Dive Procedures Manuals and is required to stop any diving practice deemed unsafe.

Evaluate, test, and maintain MBA dive equipment used for public dive programs. Enforce policies and procedures that ensure the safety of all MBA divers onsite and in the field. Supervise the operational logistics of MBA’s public dive programs. Perform other duties as required.

Core Activities:

  • Supervise the operational aspects of the Underwater Explorers (UE) and public dive programs: implement program content, maintain databases, inventories, and materials.
  • Act as Designated Person In-Charge (DPIC)/dive tender for UE, event dives and public dive programs. Mitigate risk, conduct, and coordinate institutional response to dive emergencies.
  • Assist in the recruitment and supervision of the UE staff and volunteer divers.
  • Conduct diver training, in-water evaluations and dive related boat training for public dive program staff and volunteers along with, CPR, First Aid, O2, AED training and other specialized diving skill sets.
  • Perform maintenance of all equipment used for public dive programs and under MBA auspices. Maintain current certifications/qualifications for dive related life support equipment repair.
  • Coordinate UE staff and volunteer event divers’ schedules in conjunction with Animal Care and Dive Programs staff.
  • Fill Aquarium scuba cylinders. Run breathing air analysis tests to ensure the quality and purity of compressed air to Aquarium divers.
  • Coordinate and conduct the purchasing of MBA dive and life support equipment.
  • Maintain parts inventory of all MBA dive equipment and contracts with dive equipment vendors.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Great Tide Pool Exhibit (e.g., collections, ensure compliance with MBA animal welfare, record keeping policies, etc.).
  • Conduct non-routine exhibit dive maintenance, repairs and trouble shooting.
  • Maintain professional knowledge base of diving industry standards, diving physiology, equipment, techniques, diving medicine and contraindications to diving.
  • Attend outside training sessions, symposiums, and trade shows to represent the MBA Dive Program.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life or Social Sciences, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Detailed knowledge of OSHA, Cal OSHA/AAUS/AZA/WRSTC occupational diving regulations
  • Working knowledge of productivity software and operating systems
  • MOCC/USCG Boating Safety Instructor (or equivalent)
  • Adaptive Diver Instructor
  • Current Scuba Equipment Repair Technician certifications for equipment approved for use in MBA Dive Program
  • OTS FFM repair technician certification
  • Excellent oral and written communication, effective interpersonal skills for dealing with staff, volunteers, and guests
  • Professional Scuba Inspectors (PSI) Fill Station Operator certification (or equivalent)
  • Advanced knowledge of the local marine species and environments
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and resources and to adapt daily work plans in a changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage volunteers, and train/mentor staff in technical subjects
  • Demonstrated commitment to Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Leadership Competencies
  • Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s core values

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • Typical office equipment, dive and life support equipment, boats, trailers, hand trucks
  • Constant sitting, standing, walking, bending
  • Occasional unassisted lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Aquarium exhibits, ocean, field work, office, occasional travel

Hourly Compensation Range:

$26.83-$30.77 per hour. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
