Ocean Career: GEOMAR Ocean Dynamics and Data Science Scientist

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations. The research unit Ocean Dynamics at GEOMAR uses large amounts of data generated by numerical ocean models and observations to advance our understanding of physical processes in the oceans and the climate system. Scientific foci are, among others, i) the circulation in the Atlantic, Pacific, and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, ii) the global relevance of oceanic eddies, turbulence, and upwelling, iii) the interaction of different physical processes und their role in ocean mixing, iv) scale interactions between ocean and atmosphere, and v) the role of the oceans in the climate system. These foci are imbedded in the research division 1 Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics at GEOMAR, requiring a close collaboration between research units that carry out measurements and those that do climate modelling, as well as further interdisciplinary collaborations.

The scientist will contribute to the analysis and interpretation of ocean models and observational data. This necessitates, among other things, the development and application of novel diagnostic methods, including but not restricted to advanced machine learning algorithms. One of the main challenges is the efficient and potentially automatized use and analysis of large amounts of data to gain further understanding of the oceans and the climate system in general. The scientist will support the work as well as develop and implement own research ideas within a larger, interdisciplinary, and team-oriented group.

The research unit Ocean Dynamics of the research division 1 Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics is offering a Scientist position for ocean dynamics and data science starting as early as possible.

Job Description

  • Conception, development, and implementation of new algorithms to analyze large amounts of data
  • Analysis and interpretation of numerical high-resolution simulations of the ocean
  • Advancement of the data science strategy of the working group
  • Publication of scientific results in the fields of ocean and/or data science in international journals
  • Application for and administration of computing time proposals at (inter-)national high performance computing centers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completed studies and PhD in oceanography, climate science, computer science, applied mathematics, or another related field
  • Experience in programming (e.g., FORTRAN, Python) and in analyzing and interpreting large amounts of (model-based) data sets
  • Ability to work in a team, open-mindedness, and creativity
  • Very good command of English in speech and writing

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in climate and/or ocean modelling (e.g. with FESOM or NEMO); experience in ocean dynamics and/or theoretical oceanography
  • Experience in the application for and administration of computing time proposals at (inter-)national computing centers
  • Good command of German in speech and writing is desirable but not required

The position is available for a funding period of 3 years. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).

The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position cannot be split. Flexible working models and part-time are in principle possible.
