Ocean Career: Planetary Technologies Ocean Technologist

Planetary Technologies’ vision is to protect and restore the ocean and climate for generations to come. We do this by enhancing the ocean’s natural ability to fight climate change through carbon dioxide removal and storage.

Our team combines expertise in ocean science, metallurgy, and geochemistry to safely and effectively scale up ocean-based CO2 management solutions. Working collaboratively with all of our stakeholders, we develop a cost effective and sustainable set of tools aimed at protecting and restoring our oceans and climate, ultimately doing carbon dioxide removal and storage at gigaton scale.

We are leaders, scientists, and engineers working together to collectively embody our values: respect, curiosity & creativity, accept responsibility, and win for all.

Planetary is seeking an Ocean Technologist to assist in developing and deploying on-land and ocean-based dosing and monitoring systems that support our ocean alkalinity projects. The successful candidate will also assist in servicing, maintaining, and expanding Planetary’s suite of ocean-based monitoring tools, and will be expected to assist during local and the occasional out-of-province field deployments.

Please note, there is an internal candidate for this role.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of the marine technology components of Planetary's Ocean Carbon Platform, including:
    • Iteratively developing Planetary’s Ocean “Site Automation and Monitoring” (SAM) system prototype for alkalinity dosing and aquatic biogeochemical monitoring
    • Assisting Planetary’s Operations team with deployment of SAM
    • Participate in and lead laboratory-scale tests and field trials of the ocean technology suite
  • Continuously contribute to our top company objective of operating safely at all times by recommending improvements to our monitoring systems, and maintaining a safe workplace
  • Assist in development of other Ocean Carbon Platform modules, including but not limited to, ocean monitoring, ocean modeling, and biological safety components.
  • Build and maintain our data processing tools
  • Contribute to the organization and compilation of our ocean data warehouse
  • Provide expertise in ocean observing skills (e.g., use of AUVs)
  • Assist the Operations team during field trials and ocean alkalinity enhancement projects

About You

  • You hold a Bachelor of Science with a focus on ocean science, marine biology, climate science or engineering
  • You have an ocean technology certification (preferred), and/or at least 1 year of professional experience working with oceanographic instrumentation or experience managing engineering projects
  • You have experience with coding (Python, Matlab, R), and computer aided design (CAD) software
  • You must be able to work on-site within the Halifax/ Dartmouth region
  • You are willing to participate in field campaigns outside of Halifax/Dartmouth, which may require out-of-province travel for up to several weeks at a time
  • You are curious about climate change technologies and are passionate about protecting our world for future generations
  • You hold or are able to obtain valid forklift and small vessel operation certifications

Please note, this position may require occasional rotation or weekend work.
