Ocean Career: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Marine Biology Research Assistant

Under supervision, perform standard repetitive, technical experimental procedures. Provide research support and perform sample analysis and data analysis for Marine Biology and Earth remote sensing research group. Manage biology and chemistry laboratory equipment.

Carry out routine biology and chemistry analyses to include samples collected from the Scripps Pier or from laboratory cultures for chlorophyll, particulate carbon, photosynthetic pigments, and absorption. Import Earth science satellite data and ground-based data into a Geographical Information System. Assist with literature research for preparing reports, publications, and proposals. Provide technical input for proposals. Under close supervision, participate in at-sea cruises as needed, to include standing watch, performing sample analysis, preparing equipment and reagents for going to sea, loading, and unloading ships, and assisting in deployment and operation of CTD and data logging systems, as well as sampling water from CTD Rosette system. Perform regularly assigned tasks as needed in laboratories or during fieldwork with Principal Investigator (PI) collaborators.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or environmental science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Theoretical knowledge of biology and ecology, and the principles of satellite remote sensing and creating Geographic Information Systems.
  • Proficient and strong experience using computer productivity software including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook. Knowledge of database entry and creating data queries, e.g., in Microsoft Access, and retrieving remote sensing data from public archives and analysis with GIS software, e.g., Arc GIS.
  • Experience working with biology and chemistry equipment.
  • Strong data analysis skills.
  • Experience in environmental sample analysis, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems software.
  • Experience working in a scientific laboratory with basic knowledge of chemical principles and regulations; knowledge of various chemical and solvent handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
  • Some experience finding satellite data relevant to specific goals in creating Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience in report preparation.
  • Excellent written and oral language skills.
  • Ability to operate general laboratory and analytical equipment.
  • Ability to clearly and accurately record scientific data. Must be detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Available to travel to work for up to 1 month in laboratories or to complete fieldwork with collaborators at universities in the US and in Fiji. Ability and willingness to deploy on ships for ocean science research expeditions for up to 1 month at a time. Must be able to give and hear verbal commands in a noisy environment at sea. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people at various levels, utilizing tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions and follow established lab protocols and procedures with some guidance.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles. Enthusiasm for learning and genuine interest in scientific research.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to deploy on ships for ocean science research expeditions for up to one (1) month at a time. Must be able to give and hear verbal commands in a noisy environment at sea.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
